The Blessing of the Chief Rabbi of Israel for Brit Olam

Speaking from Jerusalem, Rabbi Lau set out the classical framework of Israel's tradition: a person born into the people of Israel is bound by 613 commandments, and a person not born into Israel is bound by seven. These seven, he said, are so foundational, so meaningful, so essential to a person's character, that he wished to bless those gathered through Brit Olam to sit and give weight to them.
He named the seven as the covenant God gave Noah after the flood, a beginning of the world done correctly, in place of the corruption that came before it. And he blessed Brit Olam by name, twice, for spreading this teaching in the world in a way that lets each person connect to the spiritual dimension within.
He did not present the Noahide path as a new religion or a quick solution. He presented it as a foundational structure whose purpose is to keep the world from corruption and to build it well, so that every person can realize their own spiritual part.

יודעים אנחנו את החיבור שיש לכל אדם בין החלק הגשמי שלו, הגוף, לבין החלק הרוחני שלו, הערכים שסביבם הוא חי. ערכים שאי אפשר לכמת אותם, ואי אפשר למדוד אותם בשום צורה שהיא. אי אפשר לקחת את הערכים הללו ולשים אותם על פי מחשב ולחשוב האם הערך הזה עדיף על פני זה.

We know the connection every person holds between the physical part, the body, and the spiritual part, the values by which they live. These are values that cannot be quantified, that cannot be measured in any way. You cannot take these values, feed them into a computer, and ask whether this value outweighs that one.

Consider a person running into battle. Had he fed the data into a computer, it would have told him to turn back, to go home, not to run. But the value of friendship, the value of a people, the value of a land, drive him forward, to help his comrades and to fight for the great values in which he believes.

I know that you are gathering today, and I bless this gathering, because it comes to give weight to those values, the very values that are the foundation of an entire world.

The Holy One commanded us in His Torah that a person born into the people of Israel is bound by 613 commandments, and a person not born into Israel is bound by seven. But these seven are so foundational, so meaningful, so essential to a person's character, that I wish to bless you on your gathering through the Brit Olam organization, which brings you together to sit and give weight to these essential and meaningful values.

Values we all know: distance from idolatry, guarding against sexual immorality, care against bloodshed in all its forms, care in the seven laws of the children of Noah. These are the seven the Holy One gave Noah after the world was destroyed in the flood: let us begin the world again, but begin it correctly, in a fitting way.

Because before that, when these values were not on the table, reality was terrible, a reality in which all flesh had corrupted its way upon the earth.

And here you gather to ensure that the world is not corrupted, to ensure that the world is not spoiled but kept. And so you carry with you the seven laws that God commanded Noah, saying through them: be fruitful and multiply, add to the earth, add Torah, add holiness, add spirituality, add values, for through them you can become more complete.

This is the central point worth remembering as you gather today: to place the emphasis rightly, and to attend to the soul. To attend to what remains of the spirit, to the spiritual dimension that gives essence and meaning to our lives here in this world.

It is fitting, right and good that the Brit Olam organization spreads the teaching of the seven Noahide laws in the world, and spreads it in such a way that every person can, aware and willing, connect to the spiritual part within, and bring out the best in themselves.

My prayer is that we may all rise and ascend to Zion, that we may all know how to bring out the good from the spirit within us, in keeping with the way God commanded us, and in this way ascend, grow wise, and succeed in doing our best and bettering our world, a good world, a beautiful world, a world pleasant for all to live in, a world run by universal laws that are good for each and every one of us.
