Chapter 4, Part 8, "Brit Shalom" by Rabbi Oury Cherki

The sages of Israel praised the nations for honoring the Torah

Hello, today we continue studying the fourth chapter of the book "Brit Shalom," and here we are discussing the appropriate behavior.

As we mentioned, the appropriate behavior for those who have respect towards the Divine is to honor their parents, elders, wise people, and the people of Israel. In this section, I bring paragraph 13: "The sages of Israel praised the nations for honoring the Torah."

This means that while we find many criticisms in the Talmud about the nations of the world, there are also words of praise. One of the praises is that the nations honor the Torah. This is certainly true in relation to the Christian world, which, despite all the theological disputes we have with them, still acknowledges the holiness of the Bible. It is also somewhat true for Islam, which, though partially, honors the Torah. But even with the general culture since the translation of the Torah into Greek in ancient times, we know that the Bible is considered a respected book in the general culture. This certainly deserves praise, even though at times we may not always be fully satisfied with the way humanity understands the Bible, which is known as the "Book of Books."

So the honor given to the people of Israel is very deserved because it helps advance the world toward its noble goals.
