De Israëlische samenleving, die lange tijd in beslag werd genomen door existentiële zorgen over overleving en economische voorspoed, heeft de spirituele vragen die kenmerkend zijn voor de Joodse traditie binnen de interne sfeer van de samenleving laten bespreken, zonder zich bijna in te laten met de algemene buitencultuur. Met andere woorden, wij Joden hebben onder elkaar gedebatteerd zonder de naties bij onze discussies te betrekken. Nu is de tijd gekomen om de universele boodschappen van Israël en zijn essentiële bijdrage aan het nieuwe tijdperk dat de wereld binnengaat, te verduidelijken.
Dit is de vraag die mij ertoe heeft aangezet het boek te schrijven dat we nu bestuderen.

There is a tremendous struggle today over the question of the values by which we should live our lives. In other words, contemporary struggles differ from those of the past. Today, the battle is not about power and who controls, exploits, or oppresses. Instead, the struggles are about which values we should follow. Are they the values of liberal Western democracy, the values of Islam, or the values of Eastern spirituality? This struggle is commonly referred to today as the clash of civilizations. The primary battle is between the various facets of the Western world and the Islamic world.
