Ask the Rabbi - Customs and Practices

A Hebrew Name

Shalom,

I have a question about a Hebrew name. Is a Noahide who followed the 7 laws of Noah can change his/her name from x-tian name into a Hebrew name?

–Details:Is it possible to change his/her name into a Hebrew name because of their changing belief from foreign belief into following Sheva Mitzvot B’nei Noah.

Noahide World Center

In response to the spiritual and value-driven demand for the word of God to be disseminated by the nation of Israel to all of mankind, we have established “Brit Olam – the Noahide World Center” in Jerusalem. We are in constant contact with many people all over the world who have a strong desire to learn the words of God.

  1. Not a rabbi btw, but I don’t think there’s anything wrong with a Noahide changing his/her name to a Hebrew name wether it be legally or as a nickname. There are people who aren’t Jews at all that bear Hebrew names or names that originate from those Hebrew names in Arabic or in English such as Adam, Ovadia ( Obaidallah in Arabic ), Amir, etc. I used Arabic as an example since both languages have similarities in terms of grammar and pronunciation.
